Atlantic Clarion Workshop Reviews |
...some responses to workshops by the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band...
From a parent at Woodside Elementary School, Topsham, ME: (ACSB presented a day of workshops and an evening concert which included performances by the workshop groups.)
"I want to thank you and the band for the show you put on at Woodside Elementary School! It was amazing what you taught the kids in such a short time. We all love our children. This having been said, most school productions sound like, well, school productions. However, every group you brought out sounded like they grew up in Trinidad!"
From a teacher in LaCrosse, WI: (We made 14 instruments, and this teacher attended our summer classes in Blue Hill to learn to play and teach a pan program in her school.)
"Well, I just survived my first four days of teaching the steel drums and I have to say I have never done anything so well received by the kids in my entire teaching career! They all love it! In just four days I've already had three parents come in to class to see these 'drums' that their kids are talking about from the time they get home until they go to bed!"
From the Head of the Arts Department at Waynflete School in Portland, ME: (We did a week-long residency, and subsequently made pans for this school to continue a full-time pan program.)
"...the goals of the music faculty were to offer a course which was accessible to non-musicians and musicians alike, to teach and reinforce group skills, and to foster awareness for a culture and musical style which is different from what students already know. Steel band experiences have been so successful at Waynflete during our Spring Studies week that we've arranged to have Carl Chase make us a set of pans so that we can rehearse and perform throughout the academic year."
From the music teacher at Fairview Elementary School in Auburn, ME: (ACSB presented 2 assembly programs and an evening concert for the school and community.)
"I will remember the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band best as an exciting, skilled band, as a band that performs an extensive repertoire with great finesse, and as a group of patient, compassionate musicians who show children how to love music."
