Steel Band Workshops and Educational Programs

Since 1987 members of the band have been actively promoting the use of the steel pan in school and community settings. This includes concerts, work-shops and residencies by members of the band for school groups from 4th grade through college, consultation and support to schools starting their own pan programs, and furnishing pan instruments, accessories and maintenance to school and community programs.

  • PAN... AN INSTRUMENT FOR ALL

In a school setting, the steel pan has two very important assets. The first is accessibility. Unlike the other traditional band and orchestra instruments, which require a considerable investment of time and solitary practice before the fun of playing together can be achieved, the steel drum can be played at once - even by someone with no previous musical experience - well enough to be part of the band. It is the perfect instrument for the student who thought he or she could never play anything! Its second asset is the steel band's irresistible sound. Young and old are drawn to it, intrigued by it and want to try playing!

    WORKSHOPS and RESIDENCIES

Our workshops are suitable for middle school through adult ages. We provide one or more instructors and enough pans for 12-15 players, and in as little as a 45 minute period can have the group playing a calypso song together as a steel band. No previous musical experience or ability is needed.

Depending on travel and set up time we can usually do 3 workshops in a school day. Multiple consecutive days are cost effective and can enable students to become more proficient.

    EDUCATIONAL CONCERTS and ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS

The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band is available to present programs of music and background information about the history and culture of the steel pan instrument and calypso music. These programs work well during the school day as an all-school assembly, or can be presented in the evening to include the entire community.
